Gower Music Tours Managing Director, Kay Cook, reflects on some fantastic tours and memorable performances through the summer of 2018 - which of course may provide inspiration for your 2019 music tour.....
What a summer we had!
Those of us old enough to remember 1976 thought we’d never see another one like it but 2018 has beaten all records.
Our groups this summer left behind blue skies and soaring temperatures to travel to destinations which welcomed them with even more sun and blue, cloudless skies. What better year to savour the delights of performing concerts entertaining the relaxed tourists and locals whilst they too enjoy the summer outdoor living.
Our season kicked off with Lasswade Concert Band’s tour to Boppard in Germany where they enjoyed a packed itinerary taking in fantastic locations for outdoor concerts, relaxing trips on the Rhine and fascinating guided tours of castles and palaces.
This was closely followed by Huntingtower String Orchestra from Australia undertaking yet another ambitious 18 day tour of Switzerland, France and Italy, undertaking numerous exciting visits and performing an admirable EIGHT concerts including a shared concert at an International Festival!
Italy features heavily this summer with tours to Tuscany, Umbria and Lake Garda while some of the tried and tested favourites hosted more Gower Music Tour groups in 2018 including Valkenburg, Ostend and Ypres.
Paris was a major destination for Gower this year, as in previous years. Five Rock Choirs in their hundreds made their way over to the French Capital to enjoy an action-packed weekend of camaraderie, music and culture. Imagine the surprise of the DFDS tourists on their weekend shopping trips to Calais when 270 voices burst into song in a perfectly-timed flash mob!
For those groups wishing to venture further afield Croatia and Slovenia were the most popular choices this summer. Hardly surprising as, continually topping the annual poll of best holiday destination, Croatia is a melee of ancient and modern history, sapphire waters and art. The climate is perfect for outdoor summer concert tours. Similarly in Slovenia around Lake Bled and in southern coastal resorts like Portoroz and Piron where the historic main squares bustle with life.
The summer season is over and it’s been a roller coaster as ever. Our party leaders have had their break post-tour and are now looking forward to more exciting music tours in 2019. We start our autumn season with a closer to home exploration as St Nicholas school choir heads off to the charms of Southern Ireland. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for a continuation of the wonderful weather!
Then it’s onwards to winter tours, snow topped roofs and beautifully lit squares, mulled wine and Christmas markets. But that’s the subject of another blog - watch this space!
